Dr Cowen studied pre-clinical medicine at Merton College, Oxford University where she completed a Master’s Degree in Physiological Sciences before moving to London to complete her clinical studies, graduating from Royal Free and University College Medical School, University College London in 2001. She gained significant experience in a wide range of medical areas through hospital based work, before moving to Western Australia in 2004.

In Australia Dr Cowen pursued a career in Sports Medicine whilst continuing to work in the hospital system, completing her Australian Medical Council examinations and moving to private general practice where she gained her Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners in 2010. Dr Cowen subsequently completed her Master of Sports Medicine from the University of Queensland in 2011. She is currently enrolled in the FIFA Diploma of Football Medicine.

Dr Cowen has considerable experience in team sports, both as a player, and as team doctor. When living in Perth she held the position of Team Doctor at South Fremantle Football Club, and continued her role in WAFL football whilst living in the SW region as Team Doctor for Peel Thunder. She has also worked as the course doctor for the Etchells’ World Sailing Championships, as match day doctor for Cricket Australia, and provided leave cover for Perth Glory youth squad. She worked as a Sports Doctor at the Commonwealth Games 2018. Gill has previously provided medical services to Port Adelaide Football Club when they travel to WA and is currently the State U18 and U16 WAFC Team Doctor. Dr Cowen continues to work in private Sports Medicine practice and also works as a Senior Lecturer at Curtin University Medical School.

Dr Cowen has special interest in concussion management, assessment and treatment of tendinopathy (especially gluteal tendinopathy with its associated trochanteric bursitis), and children and adolescents’ sports injuries. She is the Sports and Exercise Medicine Network Chair for the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, a committee member for Sports Doctors Australia and teaches the Emergency Management of Severe Trauma for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons
