Cancer Rehabilitation at St George

What is Cancer Rehabilitation?

Cancer rehabilitation is a type of physiotherapy that aims to improve strength and function of those diagnosed with cancer. Being active through your cancer journey has been proven to manage the side effects of treatment, speed up recovery, boost your energy levels and your self-esteem.

What can you expect from ongoing cancer rehabilitation sessions?

Cancer rehabilitation will likely include exercise prescription, resistance training, soft tissue massage, manual therapy, advice, and education.

Your physiotherapist will tailor a treatment schedule specific to your needs to help:

  • Improve strength and mobility
  • Ease pain, soft tissue tightness and joint stiffness
  • Improve core strength, pelvic floor strength and breathing patterns
  • Manage fatigue
  • Rehabilitate and promote recovery after surgery
  • Improve compliance with cancer treatment by reducing side effects
  • Improve your physical function and quality of life

When should I start cancer rehabilitation?

Cancer rehabilitation can commence at any stage of your cancer journey. Whether you have just received an initial diagnosis, are about to have or have just had surgery, are in the middle of cancer treatment such as chemotherapy or radiology, or even during recovery and remission.

What is PINC & STEEL accreditation?

Practitioners with PINC certification are those who have undergone specific rehabilitation training for women diagnosed with cancer. Similarly, those with STEEL certification have been trained in male-specific cancer rehabilitation needs.
