After watching the above video, there are certain key points to remember when taping for shin spints:
- Initial layer of fixomul: Always place a few strips of fixomul to prevent skin irritation and to ensure the rigid tape sticks better, especially important in those patients with more hair. The fixomul should start between the distal and middle third of the shin and go up and across in a diagonal from the inside out.
- 3 – 4 Rigid strips: Working over the layer of fixomul, this tape again starts on the medial or inside border of the shin, add a slight bit of traction as you pull up and across on the diagonal. Remember you are trying to approximate the muscle to the bone to limit that bony stress.
- Circumferential elastic tape: Lock off the rigid taping by gently wrapping elastic tape around the lower leg, remembering not to pull too tight around the calf.
Thanks for joining us for this special edition of Taping Tuesday. Tune in next week for another exciting instalment and remember we are always here to assess, treat and tape your musculoskeletal concerns, we are open after hours and on Saturdays. Give us a call on (08) 9384 3269 or book online.
